How to play

Pişti (said "pishti") is played by four players in two partnerships, partners sitting opposite: here you and North play against West and East. Play goes anticlockwise, with a standard 52-card pack. The bottom card of the pack, which is never a Jack, is shown face up for everyone to see.

Four cards are dealt face down to the centre and one of them is turned up to start the pile (Jacks are passed over). Everyone gets four cards. When all sixteen have been played, the dealer deals four more each, and then four more, which uses up the pack.

Origins

Pişti, also called pişpirik, is a popular Turkish card game. The word means cooked, and it describes the capture of a pile of a single card. According to Turkish Wikipedia, the word is found with the meaning of a card game in Ahmed Vefik Paşa's Ottoman dictionary, the Lugat-ı Osmani, of 1876. It belongs to the family of fishing games, in which cards on the table are captured by matching them. It is often played by two players, or by four in partnerships as here, usually to 101 or 151. The rules here follow pagat.com's description, written in our own words. Pagat names the scoring cards only as "the 2" and "the 10"; like Turkish Wikipedia, we count only the 2 of clubs and the 10 of diamonds, which gives pagat's usual total of 16 points a hand, plus the piştis.
