How to play
Remi is played here by four players, each for themselves, with a standard 52-card pack and no jokers. Everyone gets seven cards, and the rest form the stock. The dealer plays first, and play goes clockwise.
Make combinations. A sequence is three or more consecutive numeral cards (2 to 10) of the same suit, or the Jack, Queen and King of a suit. The 10 isn't next to the Jack, and Aces can't be in sequences at all. A set is three or four cards of the same rank, Aces included, but sets only count once you have a sequence.
On your turn, draw the top card of the stock. Or, if two or more of your cards make a combination with one of the top three discards, lay that combination face up in front of you. If you used the second or third discard, the cards above it go into your hand. Then discard one card.
You can take only one card from the discards for a combination, you can't take a discard for a set until you have a sequence, and you must always keep a card to discard. Combinations on the table can't be added to.
Close when, after drawing, all your cards but one form combinations: lay them out and discard the last card. The hand also ends if a player must draw from an empty stock.
Scoring: every card in a valid combination, on the table or in hand, scores plus, and every other card scores minus. Numerals 2 to 10 are 5, Jack, Queen and King 10, and Aces 15. The closer adds 10 times the closing card's value: 50, 100 or 150.
The player with the lowest total deals next. A game here is eight deals (pagat.com doesn't set a length).

Tips & strategy
Build a sequence first: until you have one, your sets are worth nothing and every card counts against you.
Hold on to an Ace if you can close with it. It's worth 150 as the closing card.
Watch the discards: picking up the third card brings two more into your hand, which can be useful or a burden.
If the stock is running low, get your loose pictures and Aces out of your hand.
Origins
Remi is the Indonesian member of the rummy family. In Indonesia playing cards themselves are better known as kartu remi, remi cards, and Indonesian Wikipedia notes that remi is actually the name of one card game, one of the games familiar there alongside 41, truf and cangkulan. Pagat.com points out how it differs from Western rummy: the first combination must be a sequence, sequences use either numerals or pictures but never both, and there is no laying off.
