Pilot a craft over a diagonally scrolling battlefield. Strafe to dodge fire, raise and lower your altitude to fly over or under walls and obstacles, and shoot the air and ground enemies as the level scrolls past. Keep one eye on the altimeter.

Because the view is angled, you cannot tell how high you are from the picture alone, so the game gives you an altitude gauge and expects you to fly by it. Walls must be cleared, gun emplacements strafed low, and fuel drums shot for fuel you are always short of — meaning the safe altitude and the useful altitude are never the same. Learning to read that gauge instead of the screen is the entire skill curve.
