How to play
Two games share one board. Crossing the road below is about finding gaps in the traffic; crossing the river above is the opposite problem, because the water itself is fatal and the only safe ground is the logs and rafts drifting across it. Standing still keeps you alive on one and drowns you on the other.
The road has gaps you wait for. The river has none — open water kills.
Logs and turtle rafts are the only footing on the river, and they are moving while you stand on them.
A median strip between the two halves is safe ground to regroup on.
In the classic mode you must fill five home bays at the top to finish.
An endless mode drops the bays and simply keeps going.
Controls
Desktop: Arrow keys or WASD to hop in four directions; Space spends a Surge charge for a boost.
Phone & tablet: swipe on the playfield to hop in any direction, full touch support.
Tips & strategy
Change your instincts halfway up. Patience is what gets you across the road and what drowns you on the river, and most runs end on the first row of water.
Ride a craft toward the bay you still need rather than the nearest one. Drifting the wrong way costs the whole crossing.
Use the median. It is the only place you can stop and read both halves, and skipping it to keep momentum is a common way to lose.
Watch the ends of the river rows. A log that carries you off the edge is as fatal as the water.
In the classic mode, take the awkward outer bays early while you still have time to be careless.
Origins
Lane Hop revives Frogger, developed by Konami and released by Sega in 1981, which is really two games stacked on top of each other and is much harder for it.
The road below asks you to wait for gaps in traffic; the river above has no gaps, because the water kills you and only the logs and turtles are safe, so you must keep moving on a surface that is itself drifting. Standing still, the skill that keeps you alive on the road, drowns you on the river. Five homes must be filled, the timer resets each attempt, and the turtles submerge without much warning.
