A line of little wanderers marches blindly forward, assign a tight budget of skills to carve, bridge and block a safe path to the exit.
The driftlings walk endlessly in one direction and turn at walls. You can't steer them directly; instead you grant individual wanderers a skill to reshape the route. Terrain is destructible, some skills carve through it while others build over gaps, so spend your limited skill budget to lead enough of them safely to the exit.
Driftlings recreates Lemmings, released by DMA Design and Psygnosis in 1991, which took the unusual step of never letting you control the characters at all. A stream of them walks into danger and keeps walking.
All you can do is spend a fixed budget of skills — diggers, builders, blockers, climbers — on individuals, which usually means turning one of them into part of the terrain so the rest can get past. A blocker stands in place forever. The game asks you to save a quota rather than everyone, and it is unusually frank that the difference is a decision you are making, not an accident.
Driftlings is an original free browser puzzle in the guide-the-marching-crowd tradition, with destructible terrain and a budget of reshaping skills. Just open and play.
