Slotting a book by its call number is library classification, and sorting by a decimal number is less obvious than it looks.

Call numbers sort as decimals rather than as whole numbers, so 510.7 comes before 510.73 and after 510.69 — the single commonest shelving error. The Dewey system also encodes subject in the digits, so a misfile does not merely misplace a book, it moves it to the wrong topic.
