The matrix shows eight cells and a blank where the ninth belongs. Each cell varies in shape, count, rotation and shade according to rules running across the rows, columns and diagonals. Instead of picking from options, you build the missing cell directly: set each of the four feature dials to what you've deduced, then submit.

The original change is that you build the missing cell rather than pick it from options: four feature dials, set to what you have deduced.
Removing the multiple choice removes the test's best-known exploit. Raven's items can often be cracked by comparing the candidates to each other rather than by reading the matrix at all; if nothing is offered, the only route is to work out each rule and apply it.
