River Run

A river is laid over the map. Trace its path from source to mouth in the correct direction of flow, then identify the ranges and deserts it runs through. Accurate tracing and correct naming clear the round.

• Trace the river from its source down to its mouth
• Follow the true direction of flow
• Name the mountain ranges and deserts it crosses
• Complete the trace and the labels to score

• Desktop: press and drag along the river to trace it, then click or type to name features
• Phone & tablet: trace with your finger and tap or type the names

• Daily: one shared seeded river ranked globally
• Practice: fresh rivers each round across difficulty levels

• Rivers run downhill toward the sea, start high in the mountains and follow the descent
• Identify the mouth first; working back from a known delta confirms the direction
• Big rivers share their basins with signature ranges and deserts, so learn them as a set

River Run is about tracing the world's rivers and the landforms around them, building physical-geography knowledge.

• Skills: rivers, landforms, physical geography, map reading
• Best for: roughly grades 4–9 (ages 9–15)
• For parents & teachers: rivers and landforms learned by tracing them.

Tracing a river from source to mouth in the correct direction of flow is reading a drainage basin — the area whose water all converges on one outlet.

Requiring the direction, and then the ranges and deserts crossed, is the original demand.

Direction is not a detail. Rivers run downhill, so their course is a readout of the terrain, and getting the flow backwards means misreading the topography — which is why the Nile confuses people who expect north to be downhill.
