Placing a country on a scatter of two development indicators is the method Gapminder made famous — the foundation Ola Rosling, Anna Rosling Rönnlund and Hans Rosling started in 2005 to get statistics about global development actually understood.

Reasoning to a position rather than picking from options is the original demand.

Rosling's point was that most people's mental model of the world is not merely vague but systematically out of date, skewed toward a division between rich and poor countries that the data stopped supporting decades ago. Plotting a country yourself is the fastest way to discover which way your own estimate is wrong.
