Reversi was invented in 1883; the fixed-opening variant Othello was patented in 1971. Outflank a line of enemy discs and the whole line flips — the rule is unchanged here.
The eclipse is the original layer, and it works on the one thing the parent game cannot hide: the count.
Reversi is notorious for how misleading a lead is, because a single move late in the game can flip dozens of discs. Obscuring the board leans on exactly that weakness — the position you think you are winning is the one you have most reason to doubt.
