How to play

You are shown a few vague clues about a historical figure, plus their field and era. Type a name and guess. A wrong guess reveals another, sharper clue. The fewer clues you need, the higher your score — so it pays to commit early when you have a hunch.

• Read the opening clues, field and era
• Type a name; an autocomplete list helps you find the spelling
• Each wrong guess uncovers another, more specific clue
• Solve with as few clues showing as possible for the best score

Controls

• Desktop: type in the box, use arrow keys to pick a suggestion, press Enter to guess
• Phone & tablet: tap the box to bring up the keyboard, tap a suggestion or the Guess button

Tips & strategy

• Use the field and era pills to rule out whole categories of figures fast
• If an early clue rings a bell, gamble on it — points fall as more clues appear
• Easy, Medium and Hard change how obscure the figures and clues are
