Line of Fit
Tune a straight line through a cloud of points and chase the lowest possible error.
How to play
You are given a scatter of data points and a line described by y = m·x + b. Adjust the slope m and intercept b until the line fits the points as the mode demands. Residual segments show how far each point sits from your line, so you can see your error shrink.
- Exact: thread the line through every point so the total error reaches zero.
- Best Fit: get your error down to the least-squares par.
- Drift: the points drift around for 30 seconds and you keep adjusting to hold a good fit, scoring on coverage.
- Five difficulty levels change spread and point count; a Show Best button snaps to the ideal line to learn from.
Controls
- Desktop: drag the slope and intercept sliders, or drag the line itself — the middle shifts the intercept, the ends tilt the slope.
- Phone & tablet: drag the sliders or the line with your finger; tap the mode, source and difficulty buttons.
Game modes
- Daily seeded data or endless Practice, each across Exact, Best Fit and Drift challenges.
Tips & strategy
- Set the intercept first to centre the line vertically, then tilt the slope to balance points above and below.
- In Best Fit you only need to reach par, not perfection — stop fiddling once the error meets the target.
- In Drift, anticipate where the cloud is heading rather than chasing its current position.
What you'll learn
Line of Fit makes linear regression and least-squares fitting tactile, letting you feel how a line balances the scatter of data.
- Skills: linear regression, line of best fit, scatter plots, slope and intercept
- Best for: roughly high school (ages 14+)
- For parents & teachers: an intuitive bridge into statistics before the formulas.
