Ghost Position

Race a seeded circuit against the clock. The cruel catch: every lap you finish is recorded and replayed as a solid ghost car that drives your exact past line forever after. Soon you're sharing the track with a fleet of former selves, so you must keep finding new racing lines to thread past the very routes you used to take.

• Practice, endless seeded courses to learn the racing lines.

• Vary your line each lap on purpose so your ghosts don't blockade the best route.
• Take early laps on a tidy but not greedy line, you'll have to coexist with it later.
• Use the apex your ghosts avoid; their fixed paths leave gaps you can exploit.

The racing ghost — a replay of your own earlier lap, running alongside you — was popularised by Super Mario Kart in 1992 and has been a time-trial fixture since.

Here the ghost is solid. Each lap you complete comes back as an obstacle you must then avoid.

That makes improvement self-defeating in an interesting way. A fast, tight racing line is the correct play and also the thing that will be occupying that line next lap, so you are progressively crowded out of your own best route by your own best driving.
