Yacht

Each turn you roll five dice, then re-roll up to twice more, holding any dice you want to keep between rolls. When you're happy, commit the result to one open row on the scorecard, a number row, a combination like a full house or a straight, or the top-prize five-of-a-kind. Fill every category for the highest total.

• You get three rolls per turn; hold dice between rolls.
• Each scorecard category can be used only once.
• Plan which roll to 'spend' on each row, a weak roll still has to go somewhere.

Yacht is the public-domain original of a very familiar idea. It dates to at least 1938 and is a contemporary of the three-dice game Crag, sitting in a family that includes Generala in Latin America, English poker dice, and Scandinavian Yatzy.

The shape will be recognisable: five dice, up to three rolls a turn, and a scorecard of combinations to fill across twelve rounds. Yahtzee is a later development of the same game, close to it in both name and content.

That order matters and is often reversed. Yacht is not a version of the commercial game that followed it; the commercial game is a version of Yacht. What is played here is the older, freely available form.
