The Last Parapet

One defender, one gate, and a ravine full of monsters climbing toward your wall.

How to play

You hold a clifftop gate while a horde marches up a winding canyon toward it. Aim into the depth of the ravine and fire as enemies approach; anything that reaches the gate chips away its health, and when the wall falls the run is over. Between waves you draft upgrades and spend your spoils, so each run builds your defender into something stronger.

Origins

Holding a fixed position against a horde funnelled down a single approach is tower defence, with the genre's usual between-wave drafting of upgrades.

The original departure is that you aim and fire yourself. Nothing shoots automatically.

That removes what defines the genre. Tower defence is a planning game precisely because the towers fight without you — you solve the wave in advance and then watch. Putting the gun in your hands means a good layout can still be lost, and a bad one saved, which trades the genre's certainty for something closer to a siege.
