Even Split

Run a pie shop where every order is a fraction, build each one exactly from the slices you have on hand.

How to play

Pick a customer's order and assemble their fraction of a pie precisely by adding slices from your inventory. You can only use the slice sizes you're stocked with, so a half might have to be built from quarters or eighths. Fill an order exactly to serve it; skip one you can't complete and take a strike. The shift ends when every order is served or your strikes run out.

What you'll learn

Even Split builds genuine fraction sense by making you compose exact amounts from the slice sizes on hand, so equivalence, common denominators and adding fractions become something you do, not just memorize.

Origins

Building a customer's fraction out of the slice sizes you happen to stock — a half assembled from quarters or eighths — is arithmetic with dyadic rationals, fractions whose denominators are powers of two.

The original constraint is the inventory: you cannot make a third if you only hold halves and quarters, and no amount of cleverness will produce one.

That impossibility is the point. Repeated halving reaches a dense set of values and still misses most fractions entirely, which is a sharper way to meet common denominators than being told to find one — here the denominator you need either exists on your shelf or the order cannot be filled.
