Cryptogram Detective is a letter-substitution puzzle. A well-known saying has every letter swapped for another by a hidden cipher, and crucially no letter ever stands for itself. You crack it by deducing which plaintext letter each cipher symbol represents, filling every matching slot at once until the quote reads clearly.
The ciphers behind the cryptogram were not invented for amusement. They were built to keep military and personal secrets, and only later did anyone think to solve one for pleasure.
That turn seems to have happened in monasteries, among people with time for intellectual games. A manuscript at Bamberg records that Irish visitors to the court of Merfyn Frych, king of Gwynedd, who died in 844, were handed a cryptogram solvable only by transposing its letters from Latin into Greek. Around the thirteenth century the English monk Roger Bacon catalogued seven cipher methods and remarked that "a man is crazy who writes a secret in any other way than one which will conceal it from the vulgar".
The newspaper puzzle is a 19th-century invention, and Edgar Allan Poe did much of the work of popularising it — challenging readers to send him ciphers and solving them in print, which turned a scholarly technique into a column feature.
