How to play

Cryptogram Detective is a letter-substitution puzzle. A well-known saying has every letter swapped for another by a hidden cipher, and crucially no letter ever stands for itself. You crack it by deducing which plaintext letter each cipher symbol represents, filling every matching slot at once until the quote reads clearly.

• Select a cipher letter, then type the plaintext letter you think it is — every instance updates together.
• Use the frequency strip: common letters like E, T, A, O, I, and N appear most, and a single-letter word is almost always A or I.
• Each plaintext letter maps from only one cipher letter, so reusing a guess frees the old slot; clear a wrong guess to try again.
• A Hint reveals one correct letter but lowers your score, so solving clean and fast scores highest.

Game modes

• Daily: the same enciphered saying for everyone that day, for the shared leaderboard.
• Practice: a fresh random quote whenever you want another puzzle.

Controls

• Desktop: click a letter in the text or frequency strip to select it, type your guess, and use arrows or Tab to move between letters; Backspace clears a slot.
• Phone & tablet: tap a letter to select it, then type your guess on the on-screen keyboard.

Tips & strategy

• Start with the most frequent cipher letters and short words — two- and three-letter words crack the grid open fast.
• Look for apostrophe endings like 'T, 'S, and 'RE to pin down common letters quickly.
