Only later did it become wit. Latin anagrams were admired for centuries as a display of cleverness — Samuel Johnson picked Est vir qui adest as his example in A Dictionary of the English Language — and the form was popular across medieval Europe, including with the poet and composer Guillaume de Machaut.
