A nineteen-year-old built 2048 over a weekend, gave it away for free, and refused to profit from it, because he knew he had not invented the idea. The honest, tangled history of the puzzle that ate the internet in seven days.
2048 was written by Gabriele Cirulli, a nineteen-year-old Italian web developer, and published on 9 March 2014.1 He did not set out to make a hit. By his own account he built it over a single weekend, partly as a programming exercise and partly, as he put it, "as a way to pass the time", a test of whether he could code a game like the ones he had been playing, from scratch.1
He put the code on GitHub under the permissive MIT License, meaning anyone could read it, copy it, and build on it freely.1 That decision, a weekend toy, released open-source rather than locked behind a store page, is the reason 2048 exists in a thousand versions today, including the one you are reading about. The game was, from its first day, meant to be shared.
2048 was not born from nothing, and Cirulli never pretended otherwise. His game was, in his words, based directly on 1024, a game by Veewo Studio, whose own App Store listing had cheekily advertised itself as "no need to pay for Threes."1 And 1024 was itself a clone of Threes!, the polished, hand-crafted sliding-tile game by the studio Sirvo, released only about a month before 2048 appeared.1 Cirulli described his creation as "conceptually similar" to Threes!.1
So the puzzle that became a phenomenon sat at the end of a short, fast chain of imitation: an original, its clone, and a clone of the clone. Each step simplified. Threes! merges 1-and-2 into 3, then like into like, with tiles that resist you; 1024 and then 2048 flattened the idea into clean powers of two that combine when equal, easier to grasp in a glance, and, as it turned out, far easier to spread.

Here is the detail that says the most about the game. When 2048 exploded, Cirulli had every opportunity to cash in, and declined. He stated plainly that he was unwilling to make money "from a concept that [he] didn't invent."1 The developer of the runaway hit deferred, on principle, to the makers of the games he had learned from.
It is a striking inversion of the usual story. The original, Threes!, was a labour of over a year by its creators; the viral smash was a weekend's work by a teenager building on their idea. Cirulli's refusal to monetize was, in effect, an acknowledgement of that debt, an unusually clear-eyed piece of authorship ethics from someone who had just, accidentally, made one of the most-played games on Earth.
The maker of the biggest game of the moment would not profit from it, because he was honest enough to know whose idea it really was.
What happened next surprised no one more than Cirulli. Within less than a week of release, the little weekend project had drawn over four million visitors.1 Official iOS and Android versions followed in May 2014, but by then the browser game had already become a small cultural event, the kind of thing passed between coworkers and open in a dozen background tabs.
Because the source was MIT-licensed and trivially forkable, the explosion was also a proliferation. Countless variants appeared almost overnight, different grid sizes, different themes, joke editions swapping the numbers for faces or logos. The very openness that let 2048 be copied from 1024 now let 2048 be copied endlessly in turn. A game that began as the third link in a chain of clones promptly became the ancestor of thousands more.
It is worth asking why this link in the chain, and not Threes! or 1024, became the household name. Part of the answer is access, a free game that runs in any browser will always outrun one that costs a couple of dollars in an app store. But part of it is the design itself, the subject of this whole series. By reducing merging to its most legible form, two equal tiles, doubled, and naming the game after a clean, aspirational target, 2048 made itself instantly understandable and endlessly restartable.
The powers of two, the 90/10 spawn, the win-at-2048 line, the one-verb control scheme: every choice pushed toward immediacy. That leaves a game you can learn in ten seconds, lose in two minutes, and think about for years, assembled in a weekend, given away for principle, and carried around the world by the same openness that made it in the first place. Whatever it borrowed, what it did with the borrowing was entirely its own.
