Gridwork
Build a structure that bears the load on budget — pick the right materials, because a barely-passing build fatigues and fails.
How to play
Each challenge gives you a span, a target load, a budget and a fatigue goal, plus a set of member slots. For every slot you choose a material and a cross-section while a live view shows the structure sagging under load. Stay within budget and carry the load, then run a static test or a fatigue test — a build that only just passes static will fail under repeated loading.
- Stiffer materials flex less; stronger ones with bigger cross-sections carry more
- The HUD shows budget, capacity vs load, safety factor and fatigue life
- Aim for a safety factor above 1 to survive repeated loading
Controls
- Desktop: click a slot, choose its material and cross-section, then click Run static test or Run fatigue test
- Phone & tablet: tap the slot controls and test buttons — touch-friendly
Game modes
- Difficulty: Easy, Standard or Hard
- Daily shared challenge or endless Practice
Tips & strategy
- Don't design to barely pass — leave a safety-factor margin for fatigue
- Spend budget where stress is highest rather than spreading it evenly
- Stiffer material cuts deflection; a bigger section adds capacity
What you'll learn
Gridwork is a structural-engineering game about material choice, safety factors and fatigue, balancing strength, cost and failure.
- Skills: structural engineering, materials, safety factors, fatigue, design trade-offs
- Best for: roughly grades 8–12 (ages 13+)
- For parents & teachers: real engineering judgment about strength versus cost.
