A Short History of the Falling Blob

Blobline did not invent its rules. It inherited them from a puzzle game released in Japan in 1991, one built, of all reasons, to give the cast of a role-playing series something to do. Here is the line from there to here.

01 · Before the blobs

Tetris taught the world to stack

The falling-block puzzle traces back to Tetris, devised by Alexey Pajitnov in the Soviet Union in the mid-1980s. Its lesson was simple and total: shapes fall, you rotate and slot them, complete rows vanish, and the pace never stops. Every game in this essay is a variation on that grammar, a well, gravity, and a clearing rule.4

What Tetris did not have was the cascade. Clear a line in Tetris and the rows above drop by one; nothing new triggers. The genre's next leap was to make clearing recursive, to let one clear cause another, and that leap turned a solitaire of tidiness into a game of engineered explosions. The blob was where it happened.

02 · An RPG's cast needs a job

Puyo Puyo, 1991

The rules Blobline runs on were fixed by Puyo Puyo, developed and published by the Japanese studio Compile on 25 October 1991 for the MSX2, with a Famicom Disk System edition from Tokuma Shoten the same day.1 Its origin is charming: the characters came from Compile's 1990 role-playing game Madō Monogatari, and the game's originator, Kazunari Yonemitsu, felt that the puzzle games of the day had "weak" characters, so he built a puzzle game around an RPG's cast instead.1

The mechanics were the ones we still play. Blobs, "Puyo", fall in pairs; later games in the series deal them in larger groups. Connect four or more of the same color, orthogonally, and they pop; whatever sat above falls into the gap and may pop again.1 Blobline reproduces this exactly: pairs of colored blobs, a threshold of four, gravity, cascades.2 Sega collaborated with Compile on the 1992 arcade version and obtained the rights to the series in March 1998,1 but the core of the falling and matching, pairs, a threshold of four and the cascade, was already there in that first release. The duel was not: Sega's arcade version, a year later, is what added a one-player story mode and a two-player competitive mode.

The template for millions of frantic duels was drawn up to solve a marketing problem: what do you do with a beloved cast between role-playing adventures? You hand them a well and let them drop blobs.

03 · The invention that made it a duel

Nuisance blobs, and the birth of the attack

A cascade is satisfying alone, but the arcade version turned it outward: chains generate Garbage Puyo, also known as Ojama Puyo, that drop onto the opponent's field and clog it. These translucent intruders do not match; they clear only when a colored group pops next to them.1 With that, the cascade stopped being a private pleasure and became a weapon. Your combo was measured not in your own points but in how much rubbish it forced onto someone else.

The success of Street Fighter II shaped that competitive focus, with Yonemitsu trying out many mechanics in an attempt to recapture the fighting game's competitive nature.1 The result was a puzzle game with the soul of a fighting game: reads, feints, and the sudden reversal. Blobline's entire versus economy, chains converted to gray, gray dumped in slabs on the rival, boards racing to top each other out, is this 1991 invention, faithfully kept.3

04 · Where Blobline departs

One clause the ancestors never wrote

If Blobline were only a faithful copy, there would be little to say. Its contribution is a single rule bolted onto the oldest mechanic in the genre. In Puyo, clearing a nuisance blob simply removes it, the piece disappears and that is the end of it.1 Blobline calls its change neutralize-on-clear: every gray you pop off your board is not deleted but returned, one blob for one blob, straight back into the attack on your opponent.4

It is a tiny edit, the difference between a blob vanishing and a blob being launched, and it retunes the thirty-five-year-old formula. The moment of relief, when a buried player finally scrubs their well clean, becomes the moment of counterattack. Digging out and hitting back are fused into one action. The lineage runs Tetris to Puyo to a hundred imitators; Blobline's place in it is this one added verb.

The family tree, in one line

Tetris (mid-1980s) gives us the well and the clear. Puyo Puyo (1991) adds color-matching, the cascade, and nuisance-blob warfare. Countless chain-matchers refine the duel. Blobline keeps all of it and adds the return: clearing garbage fires it back.4

05 · Why the old rules survive

A grammar too good to abandon

It is worth asking why a design from 1991 is still the skeleton of a game today. The answer is that the falling-blob grammar is nearly perfect at its one job: it produces, continuously and from almost no rules, a stream of small decisions each carrying a large consequence. Four elements, a well, gravity, a match-four clear, and a cascade, generate the exponential chain rewards, the percolation-like tipping points, and the brinkmanship that fill these essays. There is very little to add and almost nothing to remove.

So designers do what Blobline does: they keep the grammar and change a single sentence. A new color count, a differently shaped well, an altered garbage rule. Blobline's chosen sentence, that surviving an attack is attacking, happens to be an unusually good one, because it fixes the genre's one structural flaw, the way a lead tends to snowball. Thirty-five years on, the blobs are still falling in pairs, still popping in fours, still burying whoever hesitates. The rules were right the first time. The art is knowing which one to rewrite.4
