Pieced is original; the jigsaw puzzle it descends from has an inventor and a date. John Spilsbury, a London engraver and mapmaker, mounted a map on wood around 1760 and cut it along the borders of the countries — a teaching aid called a dissected map, which became the puzzle.
Its name carries a second craft. In quilting, a pieced top is one assembled from fragments rather than cut whole, which is the same idea approached from the other direction: an image that exists only once the parts are joined.
What the screen changes is the table. Pieces live on a surface that pans and zooms, so the sorting space is unlimited and nothing is ever lost under the sofa — and because the picture is generated fresh each time, no one has done this particular puzzle before.
