A line of verse appears. A target meter is named. You mark every syllable as stressed or unstressed until the rhythm clicks into place.
The game presents you with a line of verse, split into syllable tiles, and names a meter, "Iambic" with its da-DUM beat, say, above a row of tall and short bars that sketch the pattern.3 Your task is to mark every syllable in that line as either stressed or unstressed.2 Every tile starts out unstressed; a click raises it to stressed, and a second click drops it back. You go through the line syllable by syllable, deciding for each one whether it carries the beat or passes it along. When you press Check, your pattern of marks either reproduces the line's natural stress or it doesn't. A correct scansion reproduces the line's own stress, and when it does, the line matches the meter you were given.
There is a pleasure in this moment-to-moment work. You read the line aloud in your head, feeling where the natural accents fall. You hear a da-DUM-da in "the ti-ger," a DUM-da-da in "mem-o-ry." When you mark "com-pu-ter" as 0-1-0 (unstressed, stressed, unstressed), you are listening to where the word puts its weight. The little jolt comes when a word's natural stress locks into the pattern you're building. The line begins to sing in the meter you've been asked to find. You are not guessing; you are hearing.1
The game's interface reduces this act of listening to a simple binary choice. Each syllable is either stressed or unstressed. There is no gradient, no "sort of stressed," no "a bit stronger than the one before." As the prosodist T. V. F. Brogan put it, meter is “a system of binary oppositions in which syllables are either marked or unmarked,” so a binary code is all that is needed to transcribe it.4 That is exactly why a single on/off toggle per syllable suffices. And scansion is the method or practice of determining and usually graphically representing the metrical pattern of a line, a pattern that in English usually repeats a regular foot. Your per-syllable stressed/unstressed marking is scansion, done with clicks and taps instead of pencil marks.2
Once you have marked the line, the game checks your scansion against the line's natural stress, and that stress was built to fit the target meter. The game knows four meters, each defined by a repeating foot. An iamb is unstressed followed by a relatively stressed syllable: da-DUM. A trochee is the opposite: stressed followed by unstressed, DUM-da. An anapest is unstressed-unstressed-stressed: da-da-DUM. A dactyl is stressed-unstressed-unstressed: DUM-da-da. These are not arbitrary patterns. They are the classic feet of English verse, the building blocks of poetic rhythm.1
When the game asks for iambic meter, it wants your line's stress pattern to tile the iamb [0,1]. When it asks for trochaic, it wants your pattern to tile [1,0]. Anapestic requires tiling [0,0,1]; dactylic requires tiling [1,0,0]. A correct scansion reproduces the line's natural stress, which by construction matches the meter. The game builds lines so their concatenated natural stress exactly tiles a target meter. You are not forcing the line into a pattern it cannot bear. You are discovering the pattern that is already there.3
Consider the iamb. It is the most common foot in English verse, and for good reason. The da-DUM motion mirrors the natural cadence of speech, the way we move from function words to content words, from articles to nouns, from auxiliaries to main verbs. "To be or not to be", the iambs pile up, one after another, creating a rhythm that feels inevitable. The trochee pushes back against that flow. "Ty-ger Ty-ger, burn-ing bright", the stress lands first (the line even drops its final weak syllable), and the line has a different weight, a different momentum. The anapest and dactyl extend the pattern to three syllables, creating a galloping or rolling effect. Each foot has its own character, and each meter creates its own kind of line.1
The game does not generate random lines and hope you can find a meter in them. It builds solvable, teachable puzzles. The game uses a curated dataset of common English words with well-agreed prosody. Each word has a fixed syllable breakdown and a fixed stress pattern. "Computer" is always 0-1-0. "Memory" is always 1-0-0. One-syllable words can go either way in real speech, but the game gives each one a canonical value: content words such as "moon" and "fire" are stressed; function words such as "the" and "with" are unstressed. This is not a rigid rule, but a strong tendency that the game leans on.3
Words are grouped by their stress "shape", the joined 0/1 string that describes their pattern. The generator assembles verse whose stress tiles a chosen foot. If the meter is iambic with three feet, the generator needs a line whose stress pattern is [0,1,0,1,0,1]. It pulls words whose shapes fit together to create that pattern. In practice this is a line that can be scanned correctly. Within the game there is no ambiguity. There is a correct answer, and finding it is the puzzle.3
This design keeps the game honest. It leans on real English stress, a fixed pattern of strong and weak syllables you cannot rearrange. You cannot decide to stress the first syllable of "computer" because it fits the pattern better. The word's stress is what it is. Your job is to hear it and mark it. When you do, you are not playing a trick on the game; you are playing along with the language.
The game offers three difficulties. These scale the challenge without changing the core mechanic. Easy lines have three feet and are always iambic or trochaic. Medium lines have four feet and add the anapest. Hard lines have five feet and can be any of the four meters, dactyls included. Harder levels also multiply the score, by 1.2 on medium and 1.5 on hard. The difficulty changes the length of the line and the range of meters, not the nature of the work. You still mark every syllable as stressed or unstressed. You still listen for the beat.3
The three difficulties also serve a pedagogical purpose. They let you start where you are and grow into more complex lines. You learn to hear the iamb by working with short, clear examples. Then you move to longer lines where the pattern must be maintained over more syllables. Then you move to meters that are less familiar, like anapestic or dactylic. A clock runs, and a quicker scan scores more, but nothing takes the line away before you finish. The game lets you build your ear step by step.3
The game offers two modes: daily and practice. In daily mode, everyone playing the same difficulty gets the same line. The line is generated from a seed built from the date, so it is identical for everyone on a given day. This creates a shared experience. Everyone is marking the same syllables, hearing the same beat, feeling the same jolt when the pattern clicks. In practice mode, you can generate new lines at will. You don't pick the meter; the game draws it from the ones your difficulty allows. You can repeat the same difficulty, or move up. Each mode and difficulty keeps its own leaderboard, and a solved daily line shows where your score ranks today.3
The daily line is a kind of appointment. It is waiting when you come back, a new line each day, the same for everyone on your difficulty. You sit down, mark the syllables, and the line reveals itself. There is a pleasure in that revelation, a satisfaction in knowing that everyone else playing at your level is hearing the same beat.
One of the game's quiet strengths is that every line has a correct answer. This is not a matter of opinion. It is not a matter of "how would Shakespeare have scanned this?" It is a matter of whether your scansion reproduces the line's natural stress. The game knows the stress pattern of every word in its dataset. It knows the meter you are working in. It knows whether your marks match. Within the game, there is no ambiguity.3
This certainty is rare in games about language. Many word games rely on synonyms, on word associations, on cleverness. Meter Maker relies on something simpler: on your ability to hear the rhythm of English. It asks you to listen, to mark what you hear, and to check your marks against the truth. When you get it right, you know it is right. When you get it wrong, Check flags the syllables you marked wrongly, and you can fix them, or spend a hint to have the game set the first wrong syllable to its true stress, at a cost to your score.
The game's determinism, its fully seeded, reproducible generation, makes this possible. A daily line is identical for everyone on the same difficulty because it comes from a seed. The engine is testable because the same seed always produces the same line. This is not a feature for developers; it is a feature for players. It means the game is honest. It means the puzzle is fair. It means that when you get it right, you can trust that you got it right.3
