In Front Lines, no unit type dominates everywhere. Three arms trade an edge on some ground for a penalty on the rest; infantry, the fourth, carries no terrain modifier at all. Deployment becomes a study in combined arms.
The first lesson of the battlefield is also the first lesson of Front Lines: there is no universally superior force. You might be tempted to stack your deployment with a single "best" unit type, but the game's design resists that impulse with ruthless consistency. Instead, it rewards the player who understands that no arm is favoured everywhere, and that those limits are not flaws to be overcome but constraints to be worked with.
The four unit types, infantry, cavalry, artillery, and skirmishers, each carry a distinct profile of strengths and vulnerabilities. Infantry is the steady baseline, reliable across all terrain but never exceptional. Cavalry can shatter enemy lines on open ground but is badly blunted in forests, marshes, or towns. Artillery is at its best in a fight on a hill yet loses a quarter of its punch in woods and streets. Skirmishers thrive where others stumble, in forests and marshes, but they field fewer men than the line infantry and take a small penalty on every other kind of ground. The game does more than describe these differences; it encodes them in multipliers that shape every calculation of power.2
This design mirrors a principle that has governed warfare for millennia: no single arm can do everything. The solution, developed over thousands of years of military experience, is combined arms, the integration of different unit types so that each compensates for the weaknesses of the others.3
The game's unit system is built around terrain affinity. Each unit type carries a terrain multiplier that modifies its effectiveness depending on the ground where a clash is fought, which is always the tile the defender holds. Your units are always the attackers, so what counts is the ground of the enemy you strike, not the tile you deploy onto. That ground also acts on every clash before unit type is considered: it multiplies the defender’s power and applies an assault penalty to the attacker. A hill defends at ×1.5 and cuts the uphill assault to ×0.9; a town, ×1.6 and ×0.8; forest, ×1.3 and ×0.85; a river, ×1.1 and ×0.6; and marsh, where the footing is bad for everyone, ×0.85 and ×0.7. Open plain and roads carry no modifier at all, and the game’s terrain legend lists these same figures. The unit-type multipliers below then apply on top, to the defender as well as the attacker. These are not subtle bonuses; they are decisive.2
Cavalry, the shock arm of most historical armies, receives a ×1.25 multiplier in a clash on open plain or road. This represents the speed and momentum that mounted forces can bring to bear in favorable conditions. However, that same cavalry drops to ×0.6 against forest, marsh, or town, and to ×0.9 on hills and rivers. A horse cannot charge through dense woods or negotiate narrow streets. The game makes this intuitive constraint arithmetic: cavalry sent into broken terrain is less than half as effective as it would be on open ground (0.6 against 1.25).
Artillery, the long-range striking force, fights at ×1.25 when the clash is on a hill, the game's nod to commanding fields of fire. But artillery loses a quarter of its effect in forest and town (×0.75), where line of sight is blocked. Everywhere else it fights at ×1.0.
Skirmishers, light infantry trained for loose, flexible combat, excel in broken terrain with a ×1.2 multiplier in forest and marsh, and pay a small ×0.95 everywhere else. Their tactics were historically designed for exactly these conditions: screening main forces, harassing enemies, and fighting at their own pace. The game rewards this historical reality by giving skirmishers their best multiplier exactly where cavalry struggles.2
Infantry, the backbone of virtually every army in history, is the one arm with no terrain modifier at all: ×1.0 on every tile, bonus and penalty alike. That flat line is the point. Infantry is never the wrong answer and never the best one, so it is the arm you spend on the ground the specialists cannot use. This is not a design oversight; it is a statement about the role of infantry in combined arms. The interaction of these factors means that terrain alone does not determine advantage. An enemy on a hill is hard to shift because it defends at ×1.5 while the uphill assault is cut to ×0.9, and harder still if that enemy is artillery, fighting there at ×1.25. A forest is a skirmisher's domain at ×1.2, but also a cavalry trap at ×0.6. The deployment problem is to place each unit so that its nearest target stands on ground that suits it, dealing the most damage for the fewest losses.
The principle of combined arms is not a modern invention. It is as old as organized warfare itself. The military practice of integrating different combat units so their strengths complement each other and compensate for individual weaknesses dates back to antiquity, when armies would usually field a screen of skirmishers to protect their spearmen during the approach to contact3. This pattern appears across cultures and eras: the Roman legion of the early Republic, Alexander's Macedonians and the Han-dynasty Chinese army all fielded different arms side by side, even if Greek hoplite warfare, by contrast, centred almost wholly on heavy infantry.3
The core idea is simple but profound. In the strategist William S. Lind's formulation, combined arms “hits the enemy with two or more arms simultaneously in such a manner that the actions he must take to defend himself from one make him more vulnerable to another.”3 If you attack with infantry alone, the enemy can concentrate his defense against you. If you attack with cavalry alone, the enemy can deploy obstacles or terrain to blunt your charge. But if you attack with skirmishers to harass and screen, infantry to hold the line, and cavalry to exploit any breakthrough, the enemy must divide his attention and his forces. He cannot defend against all threats simultaneously.
Front Lines distills this complexity into a deterministic puzzle. The enemy line is fixed and never moves; you cannot outflank or ambush in the traditional sense. But you still apply combined arms through where you place each unit. Every one of your units strikes the nearest surviving enemy, and the clashes resolve one after another, with losses carrying over. A first attack that wears down a strong defender leaves it weaker for the next unit to hit it, and a target already destroyed sends later attackers on to the next-nearest enemy. Cavalry sent at a foe on open ground, skirmishers sent at one in the woods, and infantry for the ground where neither has an edge can together achieve what no single arm could.2
Every deployment in Front Lines is a series of trade-offs. You have three to five units and two to three times as many legal deployment slots, and each slot holds only one. Because each unit strikes whichever enemy is nearest it, the slot you choose is really a choice of opponent: do you take the slot whose nearest enemy stands on open ground, so your cavalry charges at ×1.25, even when that slot sits far enough back for distance to soften the clash? Do you send your artillery at the enemy on the hill, where its ×1.25 is trimmed by the ×0.9 uphill penalty and the defender enjoys ×1.5? Do you send both skirmishers at the same wooded target, or split them across two?2
These are not abstract questions. The game's deterministic resolution means that every deployment yields the same result every time. There is no randomness to blame, no bad luck to excuse. If your cavalry is sent against a target in a forest, it will be less effective. If your artillery is sent against a town or a forest, its fire will be partly blocked. The grading system, S, A, B, C, D, F against the historical par, measures how well you navigated these trade-offs.2
The scoring system itself reinforces the combined arms philosophy. Four terms decide the score: the losses you inflict count triple, your surviving strength counts once, the enemy strength still standing is subtracted at 1.2, and your own losses are subtracted at 0.5, the lightest weight of the four. This means that a deployment that simply throws every unit at whatever is nearest will likely fall short, even if it inflicts some damage. Because each unit strikes the nearest enemy, and because distant clashes are softened (a unit eight or more squares from its target inflicts and suffers only 60 per cent of the losses of a point-blank clash), units must be positioned to engage effectively. A cavalry unit parked far from the enemy still fights, but only at a fraction of its weight.2
This is where the game's abstraction becomes educational. In real warfare, morale and supply are force multipliers that can turn a smaller force into a decisive one. Front Lines models this by scaling every unit's strength by its morale and its supply, each factor running from 50 per cent (at zero) to 100 per cent (at full). A well-led, well-fed army can beat a larger but demoralized and starving one. This is not only a game mechanic; it is a historical reality that appears in accounts from antiquity to the modern era. The game does not glorify this reality; each scenario simply fixes both sides' morale and supply, as a given of the battle alongside terrain and unit type.2
The title of this essay, "Every Arm Has a Weakness", is more than descriptive; it is the core insight of the game, and infantry states it in its purest form: to be penalised nowhere is also to be favoured nowhere. In many strategy games, the problem is to find the optimal build, the best combination of units that can defeat any opponent. Front Lines inverts this problem. The question is not which unit is best, but how to integrate units so that their weaknesses are covered by the strengths of others.3
This lesson extends beyond the game itself. The principle of combined arms remains relevant in modern military doctrine, in business strategy, in sports, in any domain where multiple elements must work together toward a common goal. The specific units may change, drones instead of cavalry, data analytics instead of artillery, but the underlying principle endures: no single element can do everything, and the integration of different elements is the path to effectiveness.3
At the same time, it is important to acknowledge what the game cannot capture. Real warfare is not a puzzle with a single correct solution. Real battles are chaotic, uncertain, and often tragic. The game's deterministic resolution is a feature of its design, not a claim about reality. In actual combat, morale can break unexpectedly, supply lines can be disrupted, and terrain can be misjudged. The game abstracts all of this into clean formulas and fixed outcomes. It is a bloodless abstraction of events that, in reality, cost human lives.2
This is not a criticism of the game; it is a statement of its scope. Front Lines is a tactical deployment puzzle, not a simulation of war. Its value lies in teaching principles (terrain, combined arms, morale, supply) as a system of trade-offs. The intellectual pleasure comes from solving a solvable problem, from finding the deployment that deals the most damage for the fewest losses. But the grade you receive, whether S or F, can never represent the cost of real conflict.2
The final lesson of Front Lines is one of humility. The game presents the battlefield as a map, and the map as a problem to be solved. This is a powerful metaphor, but it is also a limitation. The map does not show the fear of the soldier, the exhaustion of the march, the confusion of the melee. It shows only positions and multipliers, forces and terrain.
And yet, the map does teach something real. It teaches that ground matters. It teaches that no unit type is universally superior. It teaches that integration is more powerful than specialization. It teaches that the deployment, the decision made before the first blow, is often more decisive than the battle itself.
These are not new insights. They have been understood by military thinkers for thousands of years. The game does not claim to discover them; it encodes them in its mechanics and asks the player to rediscover them through play. The satisfaction of finding the right deployment, of seeing your combined arms plan resolve into victory, is the satisfaction of understanding a system. It is a small, bloodless victory, but it is real. And it is enough to make you think about the battlefield in a new way.
